Proverbs 25:28 — Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control (NIV).
Anger is the product of a lack of self-control. There are many talented men and women who don’t have self-control. They have charisma, but no character. Their lack of control opens them up to attack and causes them to be prone to outbursts. Show me a person who lacks self-control, and I’ll show you a person whose walls are broken down around him. When the walls come down, we become vulnerable.
The walls came crashing down in Moses’ life, and he lost all sense of reason. It caused him to react irrationally and say hurtful things. The walls in our lives protect us from physical, emotional, and spiritual attacks. They also keep us from acting out foolishly. Anger is just one of those foolish acts.
Self-control is a learned behavior. It does not just happen, and it cannot be imparted into you by somebody else. Self-control requires daily effort, and that’s why many people have a shortage of it. 2 Peter 1:5-8 lists several qualities we are to possess in increasing measure. One of which is self-control.
I used to battle serious anger problems. I was aware of my issue, but I could not get victory over it for some reason. I would continuously lash out and say things that were inappropriate. I never cursed or anything like that, but my words would be hurtful at times. After outbursts, I would feel guilty and want to change, but it was not until I disciplined myself that change began.
Developing self-control is a process. To this day, I continue to endure the process. I have to add to my self-control daily. There are times when I stumble and cracks form in my walls, but I repair them and fight back with the word of God. I encourage you to do the same. If self-control is a quality you lack, start the daily journey toward change today. Don’t let anger get the best of you.
James 1:19 — Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (NIV).
