Luke 19:9-10 — And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham: for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (NKJV).
My wife Heidi and I moved back to her hometown of Forest Hill over ten years ago. Heidi was hired to be the full-time children’s pastor at her home church, and I was later hired on as the youth pastor. Our church was unique in the fact that there were multiple families who traveled long distances to attend services. One of the cities they came from was Leesville (about an hour drive one way from the church).
There are basically two routes from the church to Leesville. One of them takes state highways, but the mileage is more. The other takes two-lane roads through the backwoods of central Louisiana, but the mileage is less. They both take about the same amount of time. I still remember the first time Heidi and I were asked to go make visits in Leesville.
We opted to go through “the sticks.” The trip there was seamless, but I can’t say the same for the trip home. Everything was going well until we rolled into a small town called Hineston. It was there that we were supposed to take a right onto Highway 112. I was unaware that there are two possible right turns onto Highway 112, nor do I understand how it’s even possible! One goes toward Forest Hill (the one we wanted), and the other takes you to do Union Hill (the one I took). Twenty minutes later we realized we were going the wrong way.
I was confused because it is the same highway and a right turn is needed to access both directions. I turned around and went back.
Following God’s will can be a lot like this. Many times we are going along God’s path for our lives, and we get slightly off. It’s easy to do because sometimes the wrong way looks quite similar to the right way.
Perhaps today you have veered from God’s plan. If so, here’s a truth you need to hear: The road you need to take is right where you turned off and left it. Go back to where you got off track and begin to obey Him again. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you discernment. God is faithful!
