Work Release

Romans 1:17 — For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith” (NKJV).

The first work release program was introduced in 1913 in Wisconsin. Such programs allow prisoners, who are sufficiently trusted or monitored, to leave confinement and maintain outside employment. They return to prison once their shifts end.

Many well-meaning (and lemon-sucking) believers live as if God has a work release program. They try to earn a little freedom here and there by acting just right. They think the Warden will let them out from time to time if they abide by the rules.

But here’s the thing about work release programs: They are for prisoners—those who are still bound. Therefore, God doesn’t have one. He set you free!

The righteousness of man is based on works and is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). God’s righteousness is based on Jesus’s work and is revealed from faith to faith. In order to truly be in right standing with God, you must exchange your filthy rags (your works) for faith in what Jesus did.
