Proverbs 15:23 — And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! (NKJV)
You’ve likely had someone say to you just the right thing at the just the right time. How did it make you feel? I know for me, those words have been great sources of hope, encouragement, and even correction. Words spoken in due season have the power to edify, bring clarity, and give direction.
I’ve also found out how hurtful it can be when the wrong thing is spoken at the wrong time, or when the right thing is spoken at the wrong time. Our words carry great weight. They have the power to build up or tear down our lives, as well as the lives of others.
It’s important for us to use discernment, and discretion, before our thoughts become words. If a word spoken in due season is good, the opposite must also be true. A word spoken out of season is bad. Many times we simply miss out on opportunities to bless or thank certain people, and other times we allow destructive words to fly out of our mouths without giving them a second thought.
Today is a new day and the perfect time to begin thinking before you speak. Use your words to bring life to those around you. Be sensitive to the needs of others and timely in your delivery of encouragement or correction. I believe God gives us words in due season in order to bring good to others’ lives. Be led by His Spirit, and take advantage of those opportunities.
