Isaiah 6:5 — “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty” (NIV).
I am always amazed by the relevance of God’s word. I love how He can repeatedly show me something new from a passage I’ve read and studied time and time again. My prayer is that you will develop a deeper appreciation for His word. Be open to fresh insight, and God will show Himself to you.
At the time of this encounter with the Lord, Isaiah was the prophet appointed to be the spiritual leader of Israel. He obviously had an intimate relationship with God and knew the voice of the Lord. Even so, Isaiah was undone after catching a glimpse of Him seated on the throne. After beholding the Almighty, Isaiah was immediately made aware of his unclean condition.
A friend of mine once said, “We don’t truly see ourselves until we have seen the Lord.” This is so true. I encourage you today to seek the face of God. Many people appear to have it together, when in fact, God is trying to make them aware of some changes that need to be made. I believe a lot of Christians avoid making eye contact with God because they don’t want to face the truth about themselves.
Maybe there are some areas in your life you are ashamed of. Perhaps you know full well what the things are that you struggle with. Isaiah confessed he was a man of unclean lips; then look what happened. Isaiah 6:6-7 says, “Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand…With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for'” (NIV). Hallelujah!
God is ready to take what is unclean in your life and make it clean. But before He can do a work on the inside of you, you have to be aware of your condition and confess your shortcomings to Him. Hold your life up to the word of God and seek His face today. You may not like what you see, but He will gladly clean you up a little. Thank You, Jesus!
