Proverbs 24:3-4 — 3 It takes wisdom to build a house, and understanding to set it on a firm foundation; 4 it takes knowledge to furnish its rooms with fine furniture and beautiful draperies (MSG).
I have very limited knowledge when it comes to the ins and outs of building a house. If I decided to start construction on one today, it would not end well. I have a general idea of what a finished home should look like, but I have no idea how to get from a vacant lot to an inhabitable home. I might be able to create something that resembles a house, but it would not be a place anyone would want to live in.
Even if I followed a blueprint and had the steps outlined in front of me, I would still lack the skills necessary to finish the project. The wise thing for me to do would be to hire someone to build the house for me. I would need to seek out a competent builder, and then trust that he will do the job right.
I believe this same concept can be applied to building your relationship with God. You cannot live a godly life without help and the wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit. Everyone has access to the word of God (the blueprint). But unless you receive a revelation of the Word by the Spirit of God, your relationship with Him will be as unstable as any house I try to build by myself.
Jesus is the only sure foundation for you to build your life on. After you establish Him as your foundation, the Holy Spirit will instruct you as to how to build your life. He will give you the knowledge you need in order to fill your house with fine furniture and beautiful draperies (qualities that are pleasing to God).
1 Corinthians 3:9-11 — 9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. 10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ (NIV).
