Proverbs 23:17-18 — 17 Don’t for a minute envy careless rebels; soak yourself in the Fear-of-God—18 That’s where your future lies. Then you won’t be left with an armload of nothing (MSG).
The careless rebels referred to in this passage are sinners. We are instructed not to allow our hearts to envy them. So ask yourself, “How often do I covet the possessions or lifestyles of sinful people?” Probably more times than you would like to admit.
I will be very honest. There have been numerous times I have looked at a magazine and wondered why that person gets to be on the cover. I am also aware of the lavish lifestyles that some openly sinful people have. They drive luxury vehicles, wear designer clothes, and they seem to be above the law. It sometimes seems as if sinners prosper while those who try to live righteously suffer. It can be quite frustrating.
If you are not careful, it is very easy to find yourself coveting the devil’s blessings. Satan blesses his children, but the blessings of a sinful life are fleeting (Hebrews 11:25). They have no eternal value. Satan knows this, but he is able to make a sinful lifestyle look attractive. He lures well-meaning people in and then ultimately leaves them with an armload of nothing.
On the other hand, fearing the Lord brings hope and blessing. The fear of God promises both temporal and eternal benefits. If Satan blesses his people, then how much more does God want to bless His children! God’s blessings are far superior.
Proverbs 22:4 says, “The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor and life” (NASB). He also gives confidence to those who fear Him (Proverbs 14:26). Fearing God also brings life, wisdom, and knowledge. If you take the time to study the fear of the Lord, you will realize serving God and obeying His commands have so much more to offer than a lifestyle of sin does. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Fear Him today.
Hebrews 6:14 — “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you” (NASB).
