Become Wise

Proverbs 23:15-16 — 15 Dear child, if you become wise, I’ll be one happy parent. 16 My heart will dance and sing to the tuneful truth you’ll speak (MSG).

Heidi and I once bought a brand new, full-size truck. It was our dream vehicle! We owned it for about a year and a half, and we paid down our loan considerably during that time. One day we were driving along, and I asked Heidi if she thought it would be a good idea to trade in the truck. She had actually been thinking the same thing for some time, but she did not mention it because she knew I loved the truck so much.

We began to weigh the pros and cons. The decision wound up being a no-brainer. We were tired of not driving anywhere but still having to fill it up with gas. While we had no problem paying the monthly note on the truck, we figured our monthly payments would be less if we traded for a four-door car. Also, our car insurance premium would likely decrease.

We went ahead and made the trade for a newer car with fewer miles and a longer warranty. It got double the gas mileage of the truck, and it more than met all of our family’s needs. All in all, we ended up giving ourselves a $300/month raise! At the time, trading in our dream truck proved to be a very wise decision.

I remember telling my dad we had made the trade. He was very excited. He told me that he did not understand why we wanted a truck to begin with. Owning one was not detrimental, nor was it practical. He was very pleased with our decision. It made him happy because he wanted the best for us.

Our heavenly Father responds in much the same way when we make wise choices. He always knows what is best, but He allows us to make our own decisions. When you make wise choices, His heart rejoices. I encourage you to include God in your decision-making. You will be the one who benefits from doing so.
