Proverbs 22:22-23 — 22 Don’t walk on the poor just because they’re poor, and don’t use your position to crush the weak, 23 because God will come to their defense; the life you took, he’ll take from you and give back to them (MSG).
The first principle you need to apply to your life is don’t walk on the poor, and don’t use your position to crush them. Why? The Bible says He will come to the defense of the needy if someone tries to take advantage of them. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to get caught walking all over a person whose back is guarded by Almighty God.
It is God’s desire for His people to look after those who are less fortunate. Even if you feel you don’t have a lot to offer, you can still be a blessing to others. Simply begin asking God to show you how to have a positive impact on those around you.
Many people are ruthless when it comes to those who are in need. They tend to judge people instead of showing compassion. If we will be obedient to bless those who are less fortunate than we are, we will develop a sincere desire to help others. We’ll also learn to appreciate more the things God has blessed us with.
I once received an e-mail from a certain young man. His family had fallen on really hard times. His mom was not around, and his dad became very ill and was hospitalized. He was made to live with his grandmother, and he contacted me out of desperation. It was near the end of the summer, and with school rapidly approaching, he did not have proper school clothes.
The Holy Spirit quickly prompted Heidi and me to take him shopping. What a joy it was to see his face during and after our trip to the store! He was very thankful, and his eyes had new life behind them. But he wasn’t the only one with newfound joy. Heidi and I were blessed, and there’s no doubt God was too.
