Make Like a Tree

Psalm 1:3 — And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper (KJV).

So far we have learned that God blesses a person who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of the scornful. He also blesses those who delight in His word and meditate on it habitually. The above verse likens such a person to a tree. Being called a tree may not sound too much like a blessing, but allow me to share with you three characteristics the psalmist uses to describe this tree.

First of all, this tree will be planted by rivers of water. Water is a life-giving source, but you will not be planted by just one river. You will be like a tree planted by multiple rivers that will bring you life. What an awesome blessing!

This tree will also produce fruit in due season. God blesses you to be a blessing. While it is very gratifying to bring forth godly fruit in your life, the fruit you produce is meant to benefit the people you come in contact with. Your relationships will be positively affected when you align yourself with God’s word. Life, healing, love, reconciliation, and a host of other benefits will flow out of you onto others. What an indescribable feeling.

Lastly, the leaves of this tree will not wither. This is a powerful promise. Those who are planted by the rivers of water will not be overwhelmed or blown down by the storms of life. They will not shrivel up or become ineffective. Old age and adversity will not prevail because God’s strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Praise the Lord!

Stay close to God today. His desire is for you to prosper and be a blessing to others all the days of your life. Glory!

Ezekiel 47:9 — There will be swarms of living things wherever the water of this river flows. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will become fresh. Life will flourish wherever this water flows (NLT).
