Psalm 1:1 — Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful (KJV).
The scornful are mockers and are full of contempt. They are miserable, and their mission is to make everyone else around them miserable. If we are going to be blessed by God, we cannot relax and share fellowship with scornful people.
In order to avoid sitting in the seat of mockers, we have to be able to recognize them. Today we are going to identify three characteristics of the scornful. Evaluate yourself and your relationships. Sitting on a seat of contempt will rob you of God’s blessings, so read carefully.
Mockers resent correction, and they refuse wise counsel (Proverbs 15:12). Scornful people have a hard time admitting fault, and they have an even harder time asking for help. They’d rather fall flat on their faces than seek sound advice.
Mockers are also full of pride and act in arrogance (Proverbs 21:24). They are self-seeking and have their own best interest at heart. This kind of attitude is not godly. You can choose to hang around with scornful people, but they really don’t care about you. They want you to be miserable like them.
Mockers thrive in strife. They feel at home where confusion and chaos reside, but Proverbs 22:10 says quarrels and insults come to an end when mockers are driven out. If your relationships are a source of strife in your life, evaluate your company. Associate with peacemakers.
My prayer is that you will live the blessed life God has purposed for you to have, but you must put yourself in position to be blessed. Avoid scornful people because they will rub off on you. If you already struggle in the areas listed above, receive forgiveness and purpose to live differently. God is merciful.
Proverbs 13:1 — A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke (NIV).
