Do What it Says

James 1:22 — Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says (NIV).

Many Christians know what to do, but they don’t do it. James tells us it’s as if they look at themselves in the mirror and then walk away immediately forgetting what they look like (vs. 23). They’re ever hearing but rarely doing. Just because you hear something doesn’t mean you practice it. People who only listen to, read, or memorize the Word are deceived.

Knowledge alone does not produce results. Many people know how to become physically fit. They are aware that they need to exercise and change their diet, but they don’t discipline themselves to put their knowledge to action. They know they should take care of themselves, but they don’t.

Reading Men’s Health magazine and attending health classes will not make a person physically fit. Quoting calories and memorizing workout regimens will do nothing for your figure. Studying the fat grams in certain food items will not cause you to lose inches off your waistline. In fact, a person who thinks he is in shape because of their knowledge of fitness is ignorant.

The same is true in the realm of the Spirit. Reading and memorizing the Scripture alone does not make a person more like Jesus. You have to apply biblical principles to your everyday life in order to become like Him. God is not impressed if you memorize the entire Bible, but refuse to give Him your heart. Knowledge does not equal relationship.

I want to encourage you today to God’s word into practice. Are you a person with integrity or someone who refuses to do what you know is right? Do you quote the Bible, but live however you want to? If so, you are self-deceived. Begin doing things that please God. Otherwise, you’re going to fall into a pit.

James 1:25 — But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does (NIV).
