The Recipe for Selflessness

Philippians 2:3 — Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves (NLT).

True servants are team players, and they are selfless. In fact, there is no room on a team for selfishness. In the above verse, Paul gave three qualities of a selfless person. I pray today that you would lay down any self-centeredness in your life.

The first quality of a selfless person is he does not try to impress others. Another version says not to sweet-talk your way to the top (MSG). Many people spend countless hours pretending to be someone they’re not in order to impress people who don’t care. Don’t use servanthood as a means of self-promotion. God is the one who promotes.

A selfless person is also humble. It’s very important for us to guard ourselves against false humility. A person who delights in false humility is a danger to himself and others. Such a person becomes puffed up in his mind. He is rogue and has lost connection with the Head (who is Jesus Christ). False humility stunts the growth of the entire body (see Colossians 2:18-19). We must clothe ourselves in humility in order to serve effectively.

The third quality of a selfless person is he thinks of others as better than himself. You cannot serve anyone if you think you’re better than they are. A selfish person looks down his nose at others, but a selfless person values everyone (including those he serves alongside of).

Evaluate yourself today. Are you pretending to be someone you’re not in order to impress others? Maybe you are trying to gain the approval of someone you work with or for. If so, be yourself. Also, don’t try to disguise selfishness with false humility. God knows what’s beneath the surface. Lastly, celebrate others; don’t climb over them in order to get to the top.

Philippians 2:3 — Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead (MSG).
