Be a Team Player

Philippians 2:2 — Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose (NLT).

Servants are team players. Jesus prayed in John 17:21 that all believers would be one as He and the Father are one. If Jesus prayed this for you and me, then working together must be pretty important to Him.

Philippians 2:2 lists three characteristics of a team player. As we go through them today, I challenge you to do a self-evaluation. Be honest, and ask yourself, “Do I lack in any of these areas?” If you’re going to effectively serve in any capacity, these three characteristics must become a part of your nature.

First, a team player is like-minded with all the other players on the team. Everyone must be in agreement, and the first thing you need to agree on is submission to authority. You cannot serve well if you are in rebellion. If a time comes when you don’t understand or agree with the person in charge, don’t slander or try to gang up on him. Humbly go to the person you are serving under and try to resolve your issues. Don’t poison someone else on your team.

Secondly, we will only be able to effectively serve as a team if we love one another. Notice you don’t have to like everyone, but God gives you the ability to love people the way He does. It’s very difficult to work alongside someone you despise. Ask God to give you unconditional love for others.

Lastly, we must serve together with one purpose. Everyone has their own idea of how things should be done, but you must discipline yourself to work toward a common goal. Do your part to fulfill the vision of the one in charge, and encourage others to do so as well. Make any adjustments you need to in these areas, and serve with excellence and a good attitude. Be the team player God has called you to be.

John 13:35 — “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (NASB).
