Go Away From Me

Luke 5:8 — When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (NIV)

After making the catch of a lifetime, you’d think Peter would have fallen at Jesus’ feet and worshiped Him. Instead, he told Jesus to go away! But why? Peter was scared.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid” (Luke 5:10). What was he afraid of? In the holy presence of Jesus Christ, Peter suddenly realized what a wretch he was. He became very aware of his sin, and he cried out, “I am a sinful man!” Peter felt unworthy and uncomfortable.

Let me ask you a question: Don’t you think Jesus already knew Peter was a sinful man? Sure He did. He was very aware of Peter’s spiritual condition, yet He chose to bless him and use him in the ministry anyway.

This is the kind of person Jesus is looking for—someone who is broken and repentant. God cannot effectively use someone who is comfortable in his or her sin. Many people stand calloused in the presence of God. Their hearts have been hardened; there is no fear in them. They’re not concerned with how God views them.

I’ve sometimes wondered how an unrepentant believer can be in the presence of God, yet not be moved to change. It’s because he or she has chosen sin over Jesus. God will not break a person’s will, but man can break his own will.

Peter was broken in the presence of Jesus. He was filled with awe, and the holiness of Jesus caused him to fear for his safety. His sin-stained life quivered in the presence of such purity, but Jesus told him not to be afraid.

My prayer for you today is that you would have a holy fear of God. Search yourself. God is looking to use someone who is broken in His presence. Guard yourself against becoming numb to sin. Separation from God should never be comfortable for you.

Psalm 51:9-10 — 9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God (NIV).
