God Listens, But…

2 Chronicles 7:14 — “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (NIV).

I recently heard a good friend teach on how to persuade God. His message was so enlightening that it caused me to dig deeper. Then I came across this very familiar verse of Scripture found in 2 Chronicles 14. I pray you receive fresh revelation today. God never ceases to amaze me.

The number one reason people pray is to be heard. We want God to hear our praises and complaints. We pray to thank Him and ask Him for things. Nobody goes into a time of prayer thinking, “God, I really don’t care if you hear what I’m saying or not.” No! When I take time to pray, I want God’s full attention.

Now, it’s important for us to understand that there is a major difference between listening and actively listening. Many times I’ll be in conversation with my wife, and she will ask me to do something. I’ll admit I sometimes hear what she says, but it goes in one ear and out the other. I forget about her request, and she’s left wondering why I didn’t do what she asked me to do.

Other times I’ll be fully engaged in our conversation. I’m involved in the dialogue, and if she asks me to do anything, I’ll usually follow through. I’m sure my inconsistency is frustrating to her at times, but rather than holding a grudge against me, she works at trying to better engage me.

Your attitude should be the same as hers in your conversation with God. Many people become frustrated in prayer because they don’t realize that while God does listen to everything they say, prayer has to align with His will in order for Him to act. Over the next two days I’m going to teach you how to cause God to actively listen.

2 Chronicles 7:15 — “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place” (NIV).
