Snap Out of It!

2 Samuel 11:3-4 — 3 The man said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her (NIV).

One of my favorite animated movies of all time is Pinocchio. There are many valuable lessons to be learned throughout the movie, but I want to focus on one of them in particular today. Pinocchio was a wooden puppet that eventually came to life. He was given the opportunity to become a real boy, but he had to prove himself by following the instruction of his conscience. His conscience was a cricket named Jiminy.

At one point in the film, Jiminy and Pinocchio sing a duet. The main line of the song is, “Always let your conscience be your guide.” Throughout the movie Pinocchio faced various temptations, and Jiminy constantly tried to steer him away from trouble.

This may sound funny, but for Christians, I believe the Holy Spirit performs the same function as Jiminy Cricket. He is that still, small voice behind us saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21). When we begin to venture off track, He gently reminds us to stay on course. When we are faced with temptation, He provides us with a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). God also places people in our path to be His voice to us, but we have to listen to the Holy Spirit’s instruction.

David sent someone to find out about Bathsheba because he was interested in her, but God attempted to use the messenger as a voice of reasoning. The man said to David, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” In other words, “You do realize you’re asking about a married woman, right? Snap out of it!”

Unfortunately, David ignored God’s final attempt at steering him away from sin. He committed adultery. When you face temptation, the Holy Spirit will try to talk sense into you. I encourage you to listen because He won’t make you do anything.
