1 Peter 5:8-9 — 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are (NLT).
It’s important for us not to set our lives on “cruise control.” The enemy is actively looking for people who let their guard down. So how do we stay alert without being paranoid? Peter lists three things in the verses above.
First, stand firm. Don’t roll over or freak out when adversity hits. The devil thrives in chaos, and it frustrates him when you take his best shots without losing peace. Rise up; don’t roll over.
Second, be strong in your faith. If you’re not strong in faith, you won’t stand very long. The enemy will eventually call your bluff. Put your faith in God’s word. The devil is rendered helpless by a believer who knows God’s promises and holds fast to them.
Three, remember others suffer too. Going through a difficult time is not a unique-to-you experience. I don’t say this to downplay what you might be going through, but as a reminder others have and continue to come out of hard times victoriously (including Jesus). Draw strength from their examples, and prepare to win.
