Manhunt

Jeremiah 29:13-14 — 13 “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity” (NIV).

Growing up, I was an avid fan of all the different versions of hide and seek. My personal favorite was Kick the Can, and our youth group always seemed to find a way to incorporate an intense game of Hide and Seek into any event we did at our church. When I became a youth pastor, I planned many events that included some form of hiding and seeking.

One particular game that became a big hit was Manhunt. It was especially fun in large groups. In Manhunt, one person is allotted a certain amount of time to go and hide. Once the time limit expires, everyone else is released to go find (or hunt down) the person hiding. The “man” being hunted then remains hidden until found, or he shows himself after a ten-minute time restraint.

There were always one or two people who the group could never find. (I wasn’t one of them.) They excelled at Manhunt, and it was extremely frustrating to those seeking them out. In fact, it was so wearisome many people would just quit searching for them altogether.

This is the dilemma many Christians find themselves facing today. They are seemingly lost searching for God in a never-ending game of Manhunt, and they eventually give up. But God is not playing Hide and Seek. He said Himself that He will be found by you, if you seek Him with all of your heart. He does not elude you as you draw closer to Him. God wants you to find Him!

Have you ever played Hide and Seek with a small child? When our boys were little, they would hide and start giggling as I got closer to them. Why? Because they loved it when I found them. I can picture God responding in much the same way. He longs for us to come near to Him, and as we do, it puts a huge smile on His face.

Proverbs 8:35 — For whoever finds Me finds life and receives favor from the Lord (NLT).
