Philippians 2:14-15 — 14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure (NIV).
I tend to tie being blameless and pure to avoiding immorality, and there are likely many others who share in my way of thinking. While this is true, purity is so much more. That’s why, when I came across this passage, it was a new revelation for me. Paul teaches in order to become blameless and pure, we have to do everything without complaining or arguing.
After reading this, I almost laughed out loud. It’s really not funny, but I thought to myself, “Man, there must not be very many pure people in the world. Myself included!” Complaining and arguing begin at a very young age. It’s human nature to grumble and quarrel over certain tasks or commands we find undesirable.
When I was in elementary school, I spent a lot of time playing outside with my friends. My house was the place to be after school let out for the day. Once the bell rang, we would scurry down the road from the school to my home, and we’d play baseball, basketball, or football out in the yard.
At dinnertime, my mom would come outside and call for me to come in. I rarely went inside without mumbling under my breath, or voicing my displeasure in some other way. I remember there was one day in particular that I was very belligerent. She asked me to come in for dinner, and I told her I wasn’t ready. We had a tree in our front yard that produced some kind of berries, and I decided to use them as ammo. My friends and I began pegging my mom with the berries, and she went inside. I thought I was victorious, but when my dad got home, I just wound up sorry and in a lot of trouble.
I ask you today, “What have you been whining about?” Stop grumbling, and discipline yourself. Do everything as unto the Lord. Then you will be on your way to purity.
1 Timothy 4:12 — Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity (NLT).
