Like a Cedar

Psalm 92:12-14 — 12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green (NIV).

If you live righteously and are planted in the house of God, not only will you flourish like a palm tree, you will grow like a cedar of Lebanon. This is very significant, so please allow me to explain.

The Lebanon cedar is an evergreen tree with a strong root system. Its trunk measures at up to eight feet in diameter, and it can grow up to 130 feet tall. It helps to form forests at various altitudes between 3,300 and 7,200 feet. The cedar of Lebanon is a majestic tree, and its wood was used in building King Solomon’s temple, as well as his and King David’s palaces. They are sturdy, and flourish alongside different types of trees.

Now let’s apply these characteristics to the life of a believer who is established in a local church. These Christians will have a deep root system founded in the word of God. They are strong, firm, and steadfast. They stand tall and grow in adverse conditions. They are a vital part in building the kingdom of God, and they serve His body in various capacities. Not to mention, they’re able to flourish alongside all different types of people.

Do you understand where I’m going with this? Many believers are models of inconsistency. Their relationships with God are here, there, and everywhere, and it filters down through every area of their lives.

I ask you today: Are you a cedar of Lebanon? Are you fulfilling a purpose in a local church, or do you just appear in a pew on Sunday morning? Perhaps you jump from church to church. I encourage you to get established and involved in one church, and begin to grow like a cedar of Lebanon.

Psalm 104:16 — The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that He planted (NIV).
