In Your Anger

Ephesians 4:26-27 — 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold (NIV).

Previously, I devoted two whole weeks to anger, but I believe there is more to be said. The above passage offers three truths that are important for us to understand as we walk clothed in the new self.

First of all, anger is not a sin, and just because you’ve made the decision to be a new person doesn’t mean you will never get angry again. Anger becomes sin because of a lack of self-control. We cannot allow our emotions to govern our lives—good or bad. When something or someone angers you, step back, take a deep breath, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you control yourself. Don’t just react.

Secondly, don’t let the sun go down while you’re angry. This is a point to be taken literally. If you are mad at somebody today, do not lay your head to pillow tonight until you make it right. Countless people have restless nights and go sleepless because of the ill feelings they hold toward others. If you don’t discipline yourself and begin dealing with your anger immediately, bitterness and resentment is all you will ever know.

Lastly, do not give the devil a foothold. There are many ways we can give Satan a foothold in our lives, and one of them is through our anger. A foothold is a place or support for the feet; a place where a person may stand or walk securely. When you give into your anger and allow it to rule over you, the devil literally has free access to trample all over you.

Maybe anger is getting the best of you. Perhaps you have broken relationships as a result of uncontrolled anger, and you recognize the enemy has been given a platform in your life. Do not be discouraged. You can make it right today.

Genesis 4:7 — “But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it” (NIV).
