Mark 6:31-32 — 31 He said to them, “Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place (NIV).
Your soul needs rest and so does your physical body. The reason I talked about the importance of resting your soul first is because you will never be able to rest physically until your soul is at peace. If there’s any uneasiness in your mind, will, or emotions, your physical body cannot rest. It just won’t happen for you.
Stress is one of the main causes of sickness and terminal illness. When your soul isn’t rested, your body breaks down. So once we find rest for our souls in the presence of God, we can finally get some physical rest.
Jesus instructed the disciples to come with Him, but they didn’t go just anywhere. Jesus told them to go to a quiet place by themselves. So they got in a boat and went to a solitary place. Another word for solitary is private. Jesus realized He and the disciples had to get away from everything and everybody, if they were going to be able to rest their minds and recoup physically.
You and I are no different. Many people never feel rested because they fail to separate themselves from the source of their mental or physical stress. Everyone needs a place to retreat to. Go be by yourself, or hang out with your family in the privacy of your home. Isolate yourself from unrest and chaos.
If work is wearing on you, turn your cell phone off and check messages later. If your family is driving you crazy, ask your spouse to watch the kids for a few hours and get away. It’s okay. And when you go on vacation, actually go on vacation.
Working, working, working at the expense of your mental and physical well-being doesn’t make you responsible. It’s actually very irresponsible. If you are physically drained today, I encourage you to escape to a quiet, solitary place. Schedule some time off if need be.
Hebrews 4:10 — For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His (NIV).
