Promises for the Sorrowful

John 16:22 — “You have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy” (NLT).

If you find yourself grief-stricken today, this message is for you. No matter the source of your sorrow, I pray you are encouraged by the word of the Lord. Jesus made three promises to the sorrowful in this verse. Allow His words to bless and uplift you. He is your glory and the lifter of your head (Psalm 3:3).

The first promise Jesus made is, “I will see you again.” There is coming a day when we will see Jesus face to face. 1 Corinthians 13:12 says, “Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known (NIV).

As it is now, we can only know Him in part, but we will soon know Him fully. We will know Him as well as He knows us! When Jesus returns, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is (1 John 3:2). Glory!

The second promise He made is, “Then you will rejoice.” Maybe today you are at the lowest point of your life. Be encouraged; you will rejoice again! There is an old Darrell Evans song that says, “I’m trading my sorrows. I’m trading my shame. I’m laying it down for the joy of the Lord.” Make this your song today. Psalm 30:5 says, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (NKJV). Praise God!

The third promise Jesus made is the best: “No one can rob you of that joy.” The devil will try, and he will send people to try, but nobody can steal your joy. Joy is like a gift you receive. You choose to accept it and open it up. It is yours, and you decide whether to share it, hoard it, or give it away. But nobody can rob you of it. How awesome!

Are you consumed by sorrow today? Grab a hold of these promises, and remember nobody can take them away from you.

Revelation 19:7 — Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! (NIV)
