Psalm 63:7 — For you have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy (NASB).
The Help was one of the most impactful films of 2011. It was an adaptation of the best-selling novel set in the 1960s. It primarily focused on the stories told from the perspectives of African-American maids who cleaned homes and cared for white families. It was an eye-opening movie filled with many valuable life lessons.
One of the things that stood out to me the most was how ungrateful the majority of those being “helped” were. For many of them, nothing was ever good enough. It was a rare moment that anyone said thank you. In fact, the vast majority grossly mistreated the help. They rarely asked for anything and mostly made demands. It was often tough to watch and listen to.
Ungrateful people are unfulfilled no matter how much or how little they have. It’s a sad reality, and the truth is ungratefulness is just as prevalent among believers as it is in the world (or in the movies). Many people have a chip on their shoulder and carry themselves as if they are owed something more than what they have. This kind of attitude causes a person not to appreciate anyone who helps or blesses them, including God.
God largely has a thankless job. He has been more overlooked and mistreated than any other person in history, and He is often blamed when things don’t go our way. I want to encourage you to do your part to reverse that trend. Sing for joy today under the shadow of His wings! He is your refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
Even if it seems as if He is distant, God is always working things out for the good of those who love Him. The Bible says that He is our very present help. In other words, He is always in the right place at the right time. Hallelujah! Thank Him right now.
Psalm 121:2 — My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (NIV).
