The Table is Set

Psalm 23:5 — You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over (NKJV).

Life can be very demanding, but I’ve learned that everyone makes time for what is important to them. Heidi and I decided a long time ago that we were going to make it a point to sit down at the dinner table as a family at least once a week. Sometimes our schedules allow us to do so more often, but one time is the goal. And quite often, making it to the dinner table that one time takes a valiant effort.

There are several reasons why we do this. First of all, the dinner table is a safe place. After the demands of working or going to school all day, sitting down to dinner together provides security. No matter what (or whom) we have faced, the dinner table is a refuge for all of us.

The same is true in the Spirit. Even in the presence of our enemies, God prepares a table for us. When we sit at the table with Him, we are protected. What an awesome truth! Whether you’re persecuted or just paranoid, I encourage you today to sit at His table. Then your enemies, real or imagined, cannot touch you!

The dinner table is also a source of nourishment. My wife is very accomplished in the kitchen. (Food Network needs to give her a call.) She has a unique ability to create mouthwatering dishes with veggies “hidden” in most of them. So we usually eat healthy whether we all realize it or not.

Oh, what a spread there is at the Master’s table! He has whatever we crave readily available—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. If you are weak, make a reservation today. There are multiple seats still available.

Lastly, eating together as a family promotes intimacy. We look into each other’s eyes and listen to one another. It’s a time of affirmation. Each person feels important and loved. Take time today to sit down at the table God has prepared before you. Nobody can make you receive the security, nourishment, and intimacy that comes from doing so, but why choose to miss out?
