Lessons From the Valley

Psalm 23:4 — Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (NKJV).

Perhaps today you are walking through a personal valley of the shadow of death. If so, my prayer is that this message will be a source of great encouragement to you. There are four valuable lessons to be learned from this verse.

First of all, keep walking. I would not advise you to pitch a tent or stop to play in the valley of the shadow of death. David’s life was on the line when he wrote this passage, but he kept moving forward. There will be times when you feel overwhelmed by circumstances and want to quit. That’s why it’s vitally important to walk by faith and not by what you see or feel.

Secondly, make the declaration, “I will fear no evil!” This is what the voice of faith says in the valley of death. Fear will try to intimidate your faith and muzzle its voice, but you have to stand up to fear. Otherwise, it will lord over you because it’s not going to go away on its own.

Then you must always be mindful of the fact that God is with you. Hardship can make it feel as if He is distant, but God never runs away from a fight. We distance ourselves from Him when we choose not to acknowledge Him in the midst of difficulty. Be encouraged today! God does not avoid conflict, and He thrives under pressure. He is with you in the valley.

Lastly, God does not stand by idly. The Lord is present in the valley to protect you and see you through. Take comfort in this truth. God is not unaware that you’re in a valley. He knows right where you are; He knew you were going to be there, and He’s already made provision for you to get out. Hallelujah! Keep on walking through. Make a declaration of faith. Remember that He is always with you. Don’t give up!

Matthew 28:20 — “And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (NLT).
