Jeremiah 7:9-10 — 9 “Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before Me in this house, which bears My Name, and say, ‘We are safe’—safe to do all these detestable things?” (NIV)
It’s quite amusing to me what children will do when they don’t think anyone is watching. When our boys were younger, they each had their own iPod, but they were not allowed to use them without permission. They were aware of the rule, but sometimes boys cannot help themselves.
Heidi and I used to keep their iPods in the top drawer of one of our bedside tables. It was a great hiding place until they found out we were stashing them there. Then our oldest son Noah started sending Jack on covert missions to fetch the iPods. (He didn’t care if his younger sibling took the fall.)
It didn’t take long for Heidi and I to catch on to what they were doing, so we started storing the iPods on the top shelf of one of our bookcases. One day, I walked by and noticed the iPods were missing. My first thought was that Heidi had moved them, but then I heard gaming sounds and giggles coming from the back room. The boys were busted, but I was curious as to how they got the iPods. So I took them and put them back on the same shelf.
Later that same day, I secretly watched as Jack went into his bedroom, got a stool, carried it to the bookshelf, and stood on it to reach the iPods. He would never have done it had he known I was watching. I’m sure he thought, “The coast is clear. I’m safe.”
Everything we do in secret is seen by God. Do you have some shameful habits you practice in private? Many believers are faithful to God at church, but they cheat on Him at home. Be a person of integrity. If you are doing things you know God does not approve of, stop! Repent today, and begin to do what is right now.
Jeremiah 7:11 — “Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den of robbers? But I have been watching!” declares the Lord (NIV).
