Romans 1:16 — For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes (NKJV).
Another version translates Paul’s words about the gospel as: “It’s news I’m most proud to proclaim” (MSG). Paul was not ashamed to boast about his salvation because he knew, better than anyone, who he was before Jesus did a number on him. He had chastised, tortured, and murdered countless believers. Then God changed everything.
The word salvation comes from the Greek term meaning safety, preservation, welfare, prosperity, and deliverance. Paul went from being an unruly troublemaker to having all of the above in Christ. No wonder he devoted so much of his writing and teaching to his revelation of Jesus. He wanted to let everyone in on what he had, including you.
You cannot change what you’ve done or where you’ve been, but Jesus can change who you are and where you’re going. Everyone has a past, and it doesn’t matter how ugly yours is. In Christ, you are delivered, safe, preserved, and prosperous. As our 13-year old son Noah wrote, “My past might be ugly, but my future is bright. God really did a number on me!” Yes, He did!
