Psalm 139:7 – Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? (NIV)
The answer is nowhere. Psalm 16:11 reminds us that in God’s presence is fullness of joy. So since we can’t escape His presence, we always have ready access to His joy. This is great news!
When I was in college, a few of my friends and I took a road trip from Waxahachie, Texas, to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The fuel gauge needle floated in one of the vehicles we road in, so the driver had to guess when we needed gas. At one point, we pulled off of the interstate to fill up. The four of us exited the vehicle and went inside. We returned moments later with snacks and continued our journey.
After a few short miles, we were sitting on the side of the highway with the stark realization that no one had put gas in the car. We had got some things we wanted but not what we needed.
Don’t go through life with a floating joy gauge. Just as a car needs gas, you need joy to keep going. You cannot afford to play a guessing game with the source of your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Also, when you do finally pull into His presence, fill up! Don’t simply get what you want; get all you need.
