Emphasis on the Tenses

2 Corinthians 5:17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (NKJV).

In Christ, you are a new creature altogether, a never-before-seen species or breed that cannot be cloned. A metamorphosis took place the exact moment you received Jesus. Paul said a person in Christ is a new creation—present tense. You are not trying to be, nor will you be good enough one day. You are a new creature in Him right now.

Old things have passed away—past tense. In other words, your previous moral and spiritual condition died with Christ. Everything that was wrong with you outside of Him was crucified, and you are the only person with the power to resurrect it. So don’t.

All things have become new—present tense. Pastor Mark Hankins once said, “Jesus did such a number on you in Christ that you’ll need to ask the Holy Spirit to introduce you to your new self.” You may have been or done a lot of things you’re not proud of, but refuse to identify yourself with who you used to be and what you used to do.
